Do I need a SSL Certificate?

If you are creating a web-based form where you want the visitor to enter data and submit the form to the web server for processing, you may want to use SSL (secure socket layer) encryption to protect the information from being viewed by other people on the Internet.

If website users are entering credit card numbers or other sensitive information you must use an SSL Certificate.
Credit card numbers and secure information should also not be emailed or stored on the server unencrypted.

When using SSL certificates the data is transmitted from the users browser to the web server in encrypted form. Once it is received at the web server it is decrypted, and you can then store it or process it as usual on the web server.
